The Full Story

What would you do to guarantee a 30% reduction in music-related injury for the rest of your life?

My name is Amanda. I have been a cellist and pianist since the single digits. My mother passed on her passion for harmony and I have spent the majority of my life pursuing a meaningful career in the music industry.

The Problem

In 2014, I was diagnosed with a chronic wrist injury that spelled chaos for my music degree.

A TFCC tear is a tendon issue commonly found in people who frequently use their hands for heavy loads and endurance labour. Being a cellist, my choice to catch up on practising resulted in a career change and a problem that persists to this day - a choice that will follow me to my grave.

At the time, I knew I needed to protect my arms and invest in a future where I wouldn't be asking the nearest warm body for help opening binder teeth.

Health in music performance was a new concept - so new that my university chose against funding the category - but there were many friends in my year struggling with similar symptoms. Pianists were taking years off of their degree due to carpal tunnel. Flutes got something lesser known - Cubital Tunnel Syndrome - though no less insidious.

Every dystonia marked an end to a musical career already volatile in a miserly market.

The Solution

Thanks to the efforts and advice of notable characters such as the honorable Christine Guptill (PhD, MSc(OT), BSc, BMus), recent medical journal publishings and peer-reviewed studies gave insight into how I could help my wrists heal and strengthen them to protect against future mishaps.

This knowledge translated into advice for my students, man of whom were working through issues with tension at their instrument. With each improvement, a tip was archived.
